13 Questions to Lars Kappeler (Sweet Ermengarde, Atomic Neon, October Burns Black)

Sweet Ermengarde

What was the very first record you bought?

Killers of Iron Maiden and I still love it!

What is the most expensive record you have bought?

I don’t really know. I’m more interested in the music than in the value of a record, so I’m not one of the collectors with really expensive LPs. But let’s see… I have all Christian Death releases on L’Invitation Au Suicide from which is Only Theater Of Pain the most sought-after. If it counts, I have the wooden Ceromonies box from Fields Of The Nephilim, definitely the highest price I’ve paid for an LP but it also contains 2 CDs, a DVD and some other stuff. I accidentally came to Hellbound Train by Savoy Brown which brings about 100,- € on eBay but I paid only a few cents for it.

What are your 5 very favorite bands ever?

Fields Of The Nephilim, Laibach, Killing Joke, Iron Maiden, Dead Can Dance, The Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, … what did you say? … Christian Death, … Top 5? … Type O Negative, Pink Floyd, … really, I can’t handle with those questions.

Name 5 bands that have changed your life?

Iron Maiden, because it was the first band I’ve bought a record, I’ve seen live and one of the very first I’ve really listened to. The Sisters Of Mercy, it was the first Gothic-Rock band I’ve ever heard. I’ve never heard this kind of music before and the first time I’ve heard their music was on the way to an Iron Maiden concert when I was 12. Goethes Erben or Lacrimosa or something like this.

These were the bands I’ve started listened to when I got in touch with the Gothic scene for the first time when I was 16. Not the kind of music I’m listening today, but that was not the question. Fields Of The Nephilim, my favourite band for a long time. Sweet Ermengarde for obvious reasons.

Name your 3 favorite Gothic fests?

Wave Gotik Treffen, Sacrosanct and Undercover Of Darkness

Name your 3 favorite gigs as a musician and as a fan.

Laibach at the Iron Sky tour in Bochum.
Fields Of The Nephilim on The Nephilim tour with Tony Pettitt back on bass.
Dead Can Dance at the Anastasis tour in Cologne

Name the most 3 influential albums for you as an artist.

Fields Of The Nephilim – Elizium (surprise surprise!)
Iron Maiden – Killers, not so obvious but the Steve Harris’ was a big influence for me when I started to play bass.
As a guitarist I’m very much into distant delay and reverb driven sounds, so I would say it’s And Also The Trees – Virus Meadow.

Describe yourself with 3 adjectives.

I like music. Okay, to be honest, these three words are no adjectives but nobody is perfect.

What is the most overrated Gothic band?

There are a lot of bands which got way too much attention from the Gothic scene but I wouldn’t even call this shit “Gothic”. So I have to blame the scene and not the bands.

What is the most underrated Gothic band?

Seraphin Twin. They’ve made some great songs but unfortunately disappeared very quickly again.

In which band would you have liked to play live?

IN which band? Lady Gagas, of course! Even if I’m not sure if she has a live band…

Name 3 new Gothic bands that have caught your attention lately?

Long Night, CHVE and La Scaltra

Gothic Rock or Post Punk and why?

I like all kinds of music. Gothic Rock AND Post Punk.
