13 Questions to Robert Maisey (Terminal Gods, Legion)

What was the very first record you bought?

The first CDs I owned where: Queen, Greatest Hits. Meatloaf, Bat Out Of Hell and The Darkness, Permission To Land. The first vinyl record I bought was the 12″ single of Temple Of Love by The Sisters Of Mercy. The Human League’s Reproduction was also one of the first vinyl LP album I owned.

What is the most expensive record have you bought?

My copy of the Body Electric 7″ cost £30, but that was cheap! I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than £30 for a record actually.

What are your 5 very favorite bands ever?

Anyone that has read High Fidelity by Nick Hornby knows that question is too difficult to answer.

Name 5 bands that have changed your life?

I’m going to answer a slightly different question here…. in the five years that I have been in Terminal Gods, these are the 5 bands that have refreshed and restarted my desire to carry on being in a rock band:

The band that made me want to be in a band was Rosetta Stone. And then I discovered The Stooges, and it opened my eyes to big bad world. Then Ulterior made me realise I could be cool, I just had to believe I was cool. Then Big Black taught me to love horrible noises. The Jesus And Mary Chain showed me that it’s all just pop music underneath.

Name your 3 favorite Gothic Fests?

I don’t go to festivals very often. Shout out goes to Gotham Sounds for putting Terminal Gods on not once, but twice.

Name your 3 favorite gigs as a musician and as fan?

As a musician – whichever the three with the most smoke and the biggest audiences were. As a fan – Whichever the three with the most smoke and the smallest audiences were.

Name the most 3 influential albums for you as an artist

I sort of talked about that above, really.

Describe yourself with 3 adjectives

No. Why don’t you choose 3 adjectives that you think fit my persona in Terminal Gods? That would be more interesting. Maybe I’ll tell you if you’re close to the truth.

What is the most overrated gothic band?

Joy Division

What is the most underrated gothic band?

James Rays Gangwar

In which band would you have liked to play live?

The one I formed.

Name 3 new gothic bands that have catched your attention lately?

None really. Some of my favourite post Y2K “Goth” bands haven’t come from the Goth genre at all. A.R.E. Weapons, A Place To Bury Strangers, Ulterior, Bat For Lashes, Editors, White Lies, Chvrches, Fat White Family…. At the moment I’m listening to a lot of Factory Floor. Some “classics” that have been on my stereo a lot recently include Morrissey, Public Enemy, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and Bruce Springsteen.

Gothic Rock or Post Punk and why?

I think Post-Punk has a much more diverse and enriching variety of artwork to offer. Going right from Iggy Pop’s The Idiot (which I consider the first “post-punk” record) through to modern day Post-Punk-Revival. Gothic Rock is a much more narrow, streamlined affair. I like its brutal clarity of purpose, but it lacks the ability to grow. There are certain Gothic Rock albums I think I are just perfect but I think the genre burned itself out, creatively, quite quickly. I probably only listen to 3 or 4 post-1997 Gothic Rock albums on any regular basis these days.
