13 Questions to Pasi Ravattinen (Hexdrive)

What was the very first record you bought?

First I bought was some random “movie soundtrack” which was utter crap. I was really, really young and just wanted to buy any record I could afford on my own , it was smth like 5 Finnish- marks (0,90€). First proper “record” was a cassette of “Killers” by Iron Maiden. The casing of it was partly light brown. It had the eddie- character with an axe. The Damn thing got stuck between pins of my bicycle wheel which somehow grinded a piece of it off, yet leaving the cassette itself intact. It was a close call.

What is the most expensive record have you bought?

I m not too much of a collector. I think a “Metallica” pic-single of Creeping death during the late eighties was rather expensive at the time (and for my budget). Still have it somewhere…

What are your 5 very favorite bands ever?

Name 5 bands that have changed your life?

Iron Maiden has been with me since, well forever.  I had a Kiss “phase”. WASP and Blackie Lawless was a really big deal at some point, Looong time ago. Metallica. I Have to say also: Black Sabbath. Dio, Ozzy and Lemmy (I admire his lyrics a lot). Nowadays I truly enjoy Stoner  rock. (Too many things to name one or some).

And I do believe that shaking things up, breaking the “rules” and mixing things/genres up with whatever seems fitting for the thing you wanna create is Good.. for example “Kvelertak” sounded really fresh to me, some years ago,  combining lot of  cool things in my view. I like to listen to some  eighties pop(ish) tunes as well.

AND Of course: not first but last and probably always too: The Sisters of Mercy. I mean look at the man with his sunglasses. I think Sisters are me like the eighties soundtrack I little bit missed during the actual 80´s.

Name your 3 favorite Gothic Fests?

Personally, although other members of our band have visited and even played in some… and even thou I’ve been involved in organizing few Goth-clubs in Helsinki with really good bands. I have to admit I never been to a proper, “Goth-fest” yet… I think I’m more like a “ Single-gig kinda-person” ? But come this July and this matter shall be corrected. We have the pleasure to play at the 17th “Lumous” –festival in Tampere with other, indeed, fine acts.

Name your 3 favorite gigs as a musician and as fan?

Iron Maiden “Hartwall Arena” , Helsinki(Fin) in 1999 when Bruce Dickinson rejoined the band. No words. Kvelertak at Helsinki(Fin), “Nosturi”-venue back at 2012? the energy of these people on stage could challenge anyone and I do me anyone. Helsinki “Nosturi” , the Year escapes me, maybe 2009?: The Sisters Of Mercy. Well, what can I say? I needed it.

Name the most 3 influential albums for you as an artist

I say : Dio’s “Holy Diver” and Whitesnake’s “Saints & Sinners” The 1st two “proper” Lp´s I got as Kid in the beginning of the 80´s. From my big sister’s boyfriend… Ronnie James and Coverdale…Nothing was quite the same after those I suppose. To Goth I was lured rather later on… “A Slight case of Overbombing” because The Sister of Mercy is, well…The Sister of Mercy… and for me nothing is quite like Sisters. Because…It s The Sisters. I mean, Just look at the Man with his sunglasses?

Describe yourself with 3 adjectives

Creative, energetic, impatient

What is the most overrated gothic band?

I seriously don’t worry about that too much. Anyone who cares too much what others say?

What is the most underrated gothic band?

I suppose anyone who feels they are.

In which band would you have liked to play live?

If I d get a chance to share the stage with my already long dead father, who was a professional Classical Musician with great skill and dedication for his passion….That, that would be rather unworldly and could not really be compared with anything I can think of.

Name 3 new gothic bands that have caught your attention lately?

Lately, I enjoyed most of the bands we’ve either shared the stage with or I saw and heard live. For example: Red Sun Revival, Two Witches, [di unru] , Ten After Dawn. I did come across some “The Flatfield”, “Miazma” material and those did raise my eyebrows a bit. In a good way.

Gothic Rock or Post-punk and Why?

Personally, in general, Gothic Rock appeals to me more…Why? Well, it does have Rock and Goth.
