13 Questions to Axel Grim (Les Fleurs Du Mal)

What was the very first record you bought?

I know that the first record I got was norwegian Aha’s ”Stay on these roads” album. Maybe it was there I first had my world shaken by the relentless drum machine. It featured the Yamaha RX5 that a certain pivotal act of the genre used on their second album. I am talking of course about… ”Dr. Arthur Krause”.

What is the most expensive record have you bought?

I think it is The Sisters of Mercy’s Body Electric single, original pressing. I have a special relation to that single. In a fit of mania I had a feeling, or rather a revelation, that all my favorite cultural works were in some way converging in that record and cover. For me it was expensive at the time but I simply had to have it. Looking at the price it carries today, it was obviously a good investment.

What are your 5 very favorite bands ever?

Judas Priest, Hawkwind, The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Kent

Name 5 bands that have changed your life?

My father’s band ”Offentliga trycket” that used to rehearse in our basement opened my eyes and left me with a thirst for being in one myself, getting on stage etc. Black Sabbath sure did. Then there was the electronics of Hawkwind that expanded the horizon, showed me what could be done when combining rock with the synthesizer. The Lords of the new Church steered me into the gothic were The Sisters of Mercy found me when they were needed the most.

Name your 3 favorite Gothic Fests?

Haven’t been to…a…single…one.

Name your 3 favorite gigs as a musician and as fan?

As a fan: Mew, Hultsfred festival 2005, Turbonegro, Hultsfred 2003, The Mission/Fields of the Nephilim, Brixton Academy 2011.

As a musician: Our release gig for ”I” was great. When we played in Karlstad 2010, because I kept thinking nobody was there, came on all punk-like and only later learned the place was packed. And Club Lakritz in Norrköping was special. I have thought a feeling our upcoming Copenhagen one is going to be a hit.

Name the most 3 influential albums for you as an artist

I can’t really choose. I pick up stuff here and there and I’m not sure that an entire album can be pointed out.

Describe yourself with 3 adjectives

Intelligent, Talented and Humble

What is the most overrated gothic band?

Anyone with loose fangs, top hats, songs about vampires, zombies and such.

What is the most underrated gothic band?

Les Fleurs du Mal, god damn it!

In which band would you have liked to play live?

Every time I see a band that moves me in some way, I want to be in on it.

Name 3 new gothic bands that have catched your attention lately?

I wish I could give you three but I can’t I am afraid. I’ve been so buried in child birth, moving house, work and other worldly chores I haven’t been as open as I should be. The last one I discovered was She Past Away. They’re impressive.

Gothic Rock or Post Punk and why?

Gothic Rock for the dense, warm, dark embrace
