Double Elvis started as a band in 2008, and has just released a first album : Inland Chronicles. Drummer Matt Walker (Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Morrissey) is special guest on the album, giving the band credit to play in the big league.
The record starts with “Akasaka Moon”, a very well played, well done, well produced, alt/indie song, with an easily remembered chorus, but it seems too obvious and not very original. “Union Square” has cool guitars and a great wall of sound and , and “Sea of Ashes” is a catchy alternative rock song, but again the choruses fail to convince, as they give a strong feeling of déjà vu.
The first track to leave me a really good impression is “Erosion”. The Smashing Pumpkins influence is huge, it actually sounds like a great Smashing Pumpkins song! Other very interesting tracks are “Chemin des Dames”, a groovy alternative rock song with a great energy, “Perdido Street”, an epic ballad, and the cherry on the cake “Vampyre Song”. It sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins again, but like “Erosion”, it’s a superb song, darker than the rest of the album.
All in all, Inland Chronicles benefits from an excellent production and skilled composers and musicians. But it lacks originality and I’m not too convinced at all by the “epic” choruses made to be sung in full stadiums. However all the songs are effective and the album should very much please you if you are into “mainstream alt rock” like Muse or the Killers, or if you miss the good old Smashing Pumpkin years. ► by Guillaume Renard.
