IKON’s history on Gothic Rock

What was the very first record you bought?

I really had to think hard, as it was quite a while ago. First single I ever bought was ‘I ran’ by A Flock of Seagulls in 82. And first album I bought was ‘Stop Making Sense’ by Talking Heads in 84.

What is the most expensive record have you bought?

Would have to be one of my Joy Division bootlegs, well over a hundred dollars many, many years ago.

What are your 5 very favorite bands ever?

Joy Division, Dead Can Dance, Portishead, Radiohead, Nick Cave.

Name 5 bands that have changed your life?

As above.

Name your 3 favorite Gothic Fests?

To be totally honest I wouldn’t know were to start. I am not really up to date with Festivals. There are a few in Europe that I would love to play at, but I have never been to any of them, so I cannot really give an opinion. WGT appears to be huge, would love to go or even better, perform at that. I know that Alex from Wave Records in Brazil does Wave Festival, and from what I can see the artists that play, and those who attend all have a totally positive experience. There seems to be an amazing underground scene in South America and Brazil.

Name your 3 favorite gigs as a musician and as fan?

Portishead was by far the best show I have ever been to. I think I may have had an out of body experience just from music. It was the closest thing to perfection. Dead Can Dance a couple of years ago was totally sublime. And the third best show, Nick Cave and Bad Seeds. I have seen Nick Cave a number of times and he/they never let you down.  And very close to getting into the top three, TOOL and Nirvana.

Name the most 3 influential albums for you as an artist

Joy Division – CLOSER, Portishead – THIRD, and Radiohead – KID A.

Describe yourself with 3 adjectives

Very difficult to describe yourself, but I hope: loyal, kind and passionate, not very rock and roll I know.

What is the most overrated gothic band?

I really would not feel comfortable saying who I think is overrated. Music is so personal. You cannot help what you like. What one person may consider overrated, someone else may consider their favorite band of all time. And anyone who is willing to put themselves out there artistically through music deserves a little credit.

What is the most underrated gothic band?

There are so many acts that do not get any recognition, let alone are underrated. I am not really up to date with current bands, I am a little guilty of living in my own little world.

In which band would you have liked to play live?

Joy Division. Even now, after all these years I have a little fantasy that they reform and ask me to sing. Shhh don’t tell anyone.

Name 3 new gothic bands that have caught your attention lately?

Frozen Autumn, She Past Away, and The Colour Of Silence.

Gothic Rock or Post Punk and why?

For me Post Punk, and the Joy Division connection is the main reason. There appeared to be no boundaries in Post Punk, everything was new, It was about just having a go and seeing what might happen. Post Punk covers such a diverse range of musical styles.
